In Tibetan Medicine, the body is understood as a dynamic interplay of elements, energies, and vital functions that continuously influence our physical health, emotional state, and mind. Breath and movement offer powerful ways of working directly with this living system—helping to support balance, encourage the circulation of vital energy, and cultivate greater harmony between body and mind.

In this experiential talk and workshop, Dr. Nida Chenagtsang and Liz Sung explore yoga through the lens of Sowa Rigpa, the traditional medical system of Tibet. Drawing from Tibetan medical and yogic traditions, they will share how breath and movement can be used to work with the interconnected body, energy, and mind.

Participants will explore how Tibetan yoga extends beyond physical exercise, using the body and breath not only to support health and well-being, but also to create a foundation for meditation and inner development. Combining teaching with guided practice, the session will include Tibetan yogic movement, breathwork, and meditation, allowing participants to experience these principles directly.

Open to practitioners of all levels and backgrounds, this workshop offers an opportunity to experience yoga through the distinctive perspective of Tibetan Medicine and discover practical ways to integrate its embodied wisdom into your own health regimen and spiritual practice.

PRESENTERS BIOS

Born in Amdo, northeastern Tibet, DR. NIDA CHENAGTSANG began his early studies in Sowa Rigpa (Traditional Tibetan Medicine) at his local Tibetan Medicine hospital. He was later awarded a scholarship to attend the Lhasa Tibetan Medical University, where he completed his medical education in 1996, including practical training at Tibetan Medicine hospitals in Lhasa and Lhoka. Alongside his medical education, Dr. Nida trained in Vajrayana Buddhism with teachers from all schools of Tibetan Buddhism, particularly in the Longchen Nyingthig tradition of the Nyingma school under his root teacher, Ani Ngawang Gyaltsen, and in the Dudjom Tersar lineage under Chönyid Rinpoche and Sremo Dechen Yudron. He received the complete teachings of the Yuthok Nyingthig—the unique spiritual tradition of Tibetan Medicine—from Khenpo Tsultrim Gyaltsen and Khenchen Troru Tsenam, and was requested by Jamyang Rinpoche to continue the lineage within the Rebkong ngakpa/ma tradition of non-monastic yogis and yoginis. A well-known poet in his youth, Dr. Nida has since published numerous articles and books on Sowa Rigpa and Yuthok Nyingthig in both Tibetan and English, with translations in several languages. He has extensively researched ancient Tibetan healing methods and is internationally recognized for reviving and transmitting lesser-known traditional external therapies. Dr. Nida is the founder and director of the Sowa Rigpa Institute of Tibetan Medicine, which offers comprehensive education in Sowa Rigpa and related traditions, and Sowa Rigpa Open University, an international network connecting practitioners, teachers, organizations, and communities worldwide. His work has also led to the establishment of numerous centers dedicated to Sowa Rigpa and Yuthok Nyingthig. He is co-founder of the International Ngakmang Institute, established to preserve and sustain the Rebkong ngakpa non-monastic yogic tradition within modern Tibetan society. In addition to his work as a physician, Dr. Nida continues to teach and train students in Sowa Rigpa, Yuthok Nyingthig, and Tibetan yogic traditions in more than forty countries around the world.

LIZ SUNG is a Yuthok Nyingthig practitioner under the guidance of her root teacher Dr. Nida Chenagtsang. Influenced by her Korean heritage and Mahayana Buddhist cultural roots, Liz began her dharma education under her first teacher in the Gelug lineage. As Yoga Director for the Sowa Rigpa Institute in the United States, she develops the Sowa Rigpa Yoga curriculum and programs, integrating Tibetan Medicine with Tibetan yoga, and teaches internationally. She is certified as a Sowa Rigpa Practitioner, in Hatha yoga, trauma-informed yoga, meditation, and brings a decade of embodied movement training. She is founder of SAMAYA, a meditation lifestyle brand, and co-creates Tanaduk Garden, a special initiative with Dr. Nida devoted to sharing the rich herbal and spiritual wisdom of Tibetan Medicine. She is a coordinator for the international community of Yuthok Nyingthig and Sowa Rigpa centers through Sowa Rigpa Open University.
