Robert Thurman's brilliance and boundless heart illuminated the wisdom of the Buddha for so many of us. His devotion to the message of his good friend the Fourteenth Dalai Lama changed so many of our lives. And Tenzin Bob's unique interpretation and wonderful expression of the best parts of being human and his teachings about the struggles we encounter are a fabulous transmission that we were lucky to receive. Those teachings ranged from the basic structure of Buddhist thought and practice -- his "four friendly fun facts" -- to the most sophisticated explorations of Buddhist philosophy and esoteric practice.

In this series of interactive learning and discussion, we'll explore Prof. Thurman's thought, practice his meditations, and share our memories of his teachings. It's an opportunity for everyone present to remember Bob, to continue learning from him, and imbibe his stellar energy to save this world. We'll start at the beginning, delight in each other's company, and take it to the next level. And the next....

The series is co-hosted by Columbia Prof. David "Komodo" Kittay, creator of the "Technology Religion Future" courses at Columbia University, and Chair of the Tibet House Board's Executive Committee, and Joe Loizzo, MD, PhD, Harvard-trained psychiatrist, Columbia-trained Buddhist scholar, and founder of Nalanda Institute. David and Joe will be joined by Professor Thurman's family, friends, and colleagues.

Monday, Nov 16: Creative Bob | with Laurie Anderson and Scott Snibbe

Join Laurie Anderson and Scott Snibbe for a conversation about Robert Thurman’s insights that have stayed with them through the years. From “Wisdom is bliss” to “There are no dead people,” Laurie and Scott will explore Bob’s uniquely creative approach to Buddhism and share personal stories of how his teachings have helped them live better lives. This event is part of a series honoring the legacy of the late scholar and Tibet House co-founder Robert Thurman.

Laurie Anderson is one of America’s most renowned and daring creative pioneers. Best known for her multimedia presentations, innovative use of technology and first-person style, she is a writer, director, visual artist and vocalist who has created groundbreaking works that span the worlds of art, theater, and experimental music.

The recipient of numerous honorary doctorates and awards among them Guggenheim Fellowship (1982) and the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize (2007) she continues to experiment with many different forms and contexts for her work.

As an activist Anderson has participated in many groups including Women’s Action Coalition and Occupy Art. As a Buddhist she is an active practitioner. She lives and works in New York City and eastern Long Island.

Scott Snibbe is a new media artist, author, and meditation teacher. His pioneering interactive art, held in the collections of New York MoMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art, has been exhibited worldwide in museums, public spaces, concert tours, and immersive installations. He has collaborated with Björk, Philip Glass, Beck, and James Cameron, creating innovative intersections of art, music, and technology.

As a leading figure in digital interactivity, Snibbe produced several groundbreaking art apps, including Gravilux, a number one app in Apple’s app store named “Best App of the Year”; and the world’s first “app album,” Björk: Biophilia. He was an early developer of Adobe After Effects and spent years at Paul Allen’s Interval Research Corporation researching interactive music, video, computer vision, and haptics.

A longtime student and teacher of Tibetan Buddhism, Snibbe is the executive director of the nonprofit Skeptic’s Path to Enlightenment and hosts its widely followed meditation podcast. In 2024, he released his first book, How to Train a Happy Mind, featuring a foreword by the Dalai Lama. He is currently a board member of Tibet House NYC.
