Thangka painting is a contemplative practice that unites creativity with internal exploration. Through symbols, figures, and sacred geometry, participants can observe their internal state, cultivate concentration, and express qualities such as compassion, clarity, and calm on the canvas.

In this introductory session to a longer course beginning in 2027, we will explore:

  • The Geometry of Calm: Introduction to sacred proportions as a practice of gentle permanence (samatha) to train a centered mind.
  • Active Visualization: Understanding line and form as an external manifestation of inner qualities.
  • Non-Judgmental Observation: Transforming initial difficulties into opportunities to recognize frustration as a temporary state.

The session will begin with the preparation of a sacred space and the establishment of an intention to help transition from daily activity into a state of focused presence.

The basic geometry instruction will be based on the main Buddha image, covering proportions and the importance of lines in the process of learning.

For this first introductory session, we will work on the basic geometry of a seated Buddha's body and head.

The workshop is open to anyone interested in beginning their exploration of Thangka painting and meditation. There is no need for any special painting skills or previous experience.

Required Materials (To Be Provided by Participants): Paper (or sketch block), pencils, rulers, sharpener, eraser, and a support base for paper.

PRESENTER BIO

Florencia Sánchez, born in Guadalajara, is an architect by profession, as well as a yoga and meditation instructor and art therapist. For over 28 years, she has delved deeply into yoga philosophy, Buddhism, meditation, and alternative therapies under the tutelage of various masters, philosophers, and doctors. Florencia took refuge under Lama Tony Karmam 14 years ago, when she received her name Padma Karma for the second time. Over the last 12 years, she has studied traditional painting techniques under Master Pema Rinzing in New York City. This fusion of disciplines allows her to use Thangka painting as a tool for meditation and expanding consciousness.
