Phantom Voices in Tibet by June Calendar

Calender, an American traveler who visited Tibet twice in 1995 and 1996, offers a reflective account of his experiences, interwoven with imagined conversations featuring notable writers on Tibet, such as Alexandra David-Neel, Theos Bernard, and Heinrich Harrer (Seven Years in Tibet). By drawing from their works, he contrasts Tibet’s past with its present following China's takeover in the 1950s.

This creative literary approach adds a unique layer to the travel narrative, though the shifts between historical reflections and personal observations may feel uneven at times. The book includes illustrations based on the author’s own photographs. While recent works such as Robert Apte’s Tibet: Enduring Spirit, Exploited Land and Steven Batchelor’s Tibet Guide provide comprehensive insights, this debut offers an alternative perspective for readers interested in a personal and imaginative take on Tibet’s evolving landscape.
