My Tibetan Childhood: When Ice Shattered Stone by Naktsang Nulo (Author), Angus Cargill (Translator), Sonam Lhamo (Translator)

Collections: Books

Weight: 16.0 oz

In My Tibetan Childhood, Naktsang Nulo reflects on his life in Tibet's Amdo region during the 1950s. From the perspective of his ten-year-old self, he shares his experiences growing up as a nomad on the eastern plateau. He recounts pilgrimages to monasteries, including a remarkable 1,500-mile horseback journey his family undertook to and from Lhasa. A year later, they retraced this path while fleeing from advancing Chinese troops. Naktsang's father participated in the little-known 1958 Amdo rebellion against the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, where he tragically lost his life. The following year, Naktsang and his brother were imprisoned in a camp, where, amid a devastating famine, very few children survived.

BOOK REVIEW
The book carries the reader along on a huge tidal wave of emotion. The beauty of the landscape, the compassion and love between individuals, and the cruelty and violence of daily life, combined with the high adventure of travel and escape, make this at times a real page-turner as well as a significant breakthrough in our understanding of the history of Amdo." ―Wendy Palace, Asian Affairs
